Carly likes Brooke

Carly Simon apparently likes Brooke White, going so far as to say that "she sings the song (You're So Vain) so much better than I ever did or ever could."

Carly mentions that she isn't good in front of a huge audience, leaving the inference that Brooke isn't either, but that she could still be successful.

I've always held that Brooke is not that great of a performer, but she is a great singer. I think she is equal in talent to Carly. Unfortunately, the folky singer-songwriter is not in vogue right now, so I don't think she will have huge commercial success. I'll buy her CD, though.

Top 5 Night Recap

Can you imagine my great pleasure in realizing that we are now at the stage of American Idol where each contestant sings two songs, and we don't have to hear twice the Ramiele or twice the Carly? Joy, joy, joy!

So anyway, let's hear some Neil Diamond:

Starting out tonight is Jason Castro. The fact that he gets the tough number one spot and that he is (along with Brooke and Syesha) on the edge anyway, makes me think he will be going home before I even listen to any of the songs. He is going to start out tonight with "Forever in Blue Jeans". One word: uninspired. This version sounds like it could be good, and I think I may like the studio version, but I'm just not wowed by this performance. Kerry: "It was alright. He's getting kind of boring." Braden rating: 4.5/10 Kerry rating: 6/10

David Cook will sing Second. He is sitting on the potty chairs with Ryan and tries to turn the interview around at him. It doesn't work. He comes off as very cocky. He's singing "I'm Alive". He starts out and he isn't mumbling! Miracle! That said, he is trying to hard to keep up his tempo and he is kind of flat. I think he is trying to do the Neil Diamond gravelly voice and it just sounds like he is missing the notes. Wow, that felt short. Kerry: "booooooring." Braden rating: 5/10 Kerry rating: 4/10

Third is Brooke White and she is going to be playing instruments for today's songs. She is starting with "I'm a Believer". Brooke looks like she is having fun, but what's with the weird vibrato. She is not giving a powerful enough performance for this song. It seems to me like she is swallowing the end of her words. I mean, this is aaight, but I'm not blown away. Kerry: "It was just okay for me, dog." Braden rating: 5.5/10 Kerry rating: 5.5/10

Fourth is David Archuleta who is tackling "Sweet Caroline", which, along with what he will supposedly sing later are two huge ND songs. David looks like he is having fun as well. I'm on the fence with this one because this is one of my favorite Diamond songs, and he is really taking it someplace different. I'm going to have to stick with the pattern for the night and give it a great big "meh". Kerry: "I agree with my husband. He doesn't have a man-crush on Seacrest." Braden rating: 6/10 Kerry rating: 7/10

Fifth is Syesha Mercado who will serenade us with "Hello Again". Have I ever mentioned that she is really beautiful? She is really beautiful. Neil Diamond wants to give her a hug. I want to give Kerry a hug. I don't like it when they sit on the edge of the stage to sing. I don't like it when the audience does that stupid hand-wavy thing. That all said, I do like what Syesha is doing with this song. This is the Syesha that I really liked during Hollywood week: strong voice, on key, perfect pitch and able to hold notes without faltering. Kerry: "She sang it beautifully, but it isn't all that memorable" Braden rating: 8/10 Kerry rating: 7/10

Now all of the idols are coming out and the judges are going to comment on this round:

Randy: Jason was just okay, David was in the zone, Brooke was better than last week, David Archuleta was the bomb. Syesha was in the zone and strong.
Paula: Jason shows his lower register. Now she is talking about his second song, but he hasn't sung a second song yet. Uh oh. What is going on? Now Randy and Simon are shutting her up. Now she is trying to cover up by pretending that she was talking about David Cook with the second critique. Paula, darling, listen up to this friendly advice from a nurse: "lay off the narcotics before the show. Ask your doctor if Toradol is right for you."
Simon: Jason was forgetable, David was just above average, Brooke was a nightmare, David Archuleta was amateurish, Syesha was old-fashioned. Get better in round two or I will hunt you down and eat your mothers for breakfast.

And boom, just like that, we are off on round two.

Sixth is Jason singing "September Morn". Oh, how original: Jason is sitting on a stool and singing. Like he has done with every other song he has ever sung. Kerry: "do you realise that he looks like the creature from Jabba the Hut's palace who answers the door." Braden: hmm. Back to the song critique. This is another okay performance that just isn't going anywhere. Again, maybe I'll like the studio version, but I'm not feeling it. Kerry rating: "I thought it was more his style. He did better on this one than on the first one." Judges: Randy thought it was okay. Paula thought he took the same liberty on both songs. What does that mean? Simon doesn't recognize Jason. That's not a compliment. Braden rating: 5/10 Kerry rating: 6.5/10

Seventh is David C singing "All I Really Need is You". This song is quite breathy so far. I'm not digging this. I'll say it again for the 80th time tonight: maybe I'll like the studio version. Now we reach the "big" part of the song and David is reaching for the big notes and it sounds just a little pained. Meh. Kerry: "My score just kept going down and down and down. The last half of that song was horrible." Judges: Randy is a huge David Cook fan. He's also tone-deaf. Paula is proud of him. She is also drunk. Simon thinks it was brilliant. It wasn't. Braden rating: 5/10 Kerry rating: 6/10

Eighth is Brooke who is going to show us who she is and what she said... or at least she is singing "I Am... I Said". She is sitting at the piano for this song. Brooke admits she is not Simon's dream come true. Kerry is my dream come true. I'm getting dizzy with the camera circling the piano. Not starting off very strong. Once she hits the chorus, she is getting much better. She is even trying for some higher notes. This isn't a brilliant performance, but I'm not mad at her. I think I'll like the studio version. Kerry: "She was definately more Brooke-y. She did a reasonable job." Judges: Randy thought she did a nice job. Paula is drunk. Simon didn't think it was incredible but seemed to like it. Braden rating: 7/10 Kerry rating: 7/10

Ninth is David singing "America" - perhaps the best-known Neil Diamond song, which makes it somewhat of a tall order. I have doubts about how he will do with a song that needs such a strong up-tempo vocal. He's off and he is hitting it just right. He is Archuletizing it a little, but I like it. Word. Kerry: "He certainly had a good time with that. It wasn't his best performance, but I liked it." Judges: Randy thinks he is in the zone "for a young man" whatever that means. Paula wants to marry him. Simon thinks he ticked all the boxes. Braden rating: 7.5/10 Kerry rating: 7.5/10

Tenth is Syesha singing a song that I very much dislike: "Thank the Lord for the Night time". She has the backup singers right on stage with her. I don't like this song. She's doing okay with it, though. I don't like this song. I like her dress. I don't like her song choice. Sassy. Kerry: "She showed a lot of personality. I like her." Judges: Randy thinks she is realizing who she is. Paula is drunk. Simon thinks this is the strangest show ever. He says that she is a very good "actress stroke singer" I think he means "actress slash singer". He thinks that she may be in trouble. Braden rating: 7/10 Kerry rating: 7.5/10

So shall we put all of those ratings together? (average Braden and Kerry rating)

First round:

Syesha Mercado 7.5
David Archuleta 6.5
Brooke White 5.5
Jason Castro 5.25
David Cook 4.5

Second round:

David Archuleta 7.5
Syesha Mercado 7.25
Brooke White 7
Jason Castro 5.75
David Cook 5.5

All together, now:

Syesha Mercado 7.4
David Archuleta 7
Brooke White 6.25
Jason Castro 5.5
David Cook 5

So looking at the numbers. We weren't impressed tonight. In fact, out of 10 songs, I'm hard-pressed to think of more than a couple that I even want to listen to again. Nobody was terrible, but there were a whole lot of yawns throughout the show.

And now...

THE PREDICTIONS

Braden thinks the bottom two will be Brooke and Jason with Jason going home
Kerry thinks the bottom two will be Jason and Brooke with Jason going home

LaToya London

Thinking about Season 3 in my last post got me thinking about why I stopped watching AI after that season was over.

I hate Fantasia. No, really, I hate her. Okay, maybe she is a nice person. I hate her singing and her stage presence and her performances. This great dislike was just excacerbated when Latoya London, who absolutely completely 100% should have won season 3 in a landslide was kicked off in fourth place. Compare the ratings at whatnottosing.com for Latoya (2nd Highest average rating of all seasons) and Fantasia

What. Is. Up. With. Stupid. Voters?

Latoya:

All By Myself

Somewhere

Don't Rain On My Parade

Too Close for Comfort/Don't Rain On My Parade

Someone Saved My Life Tonight

Aint Goin' Down ('Til the Sun Comes Up)

All the Time

Aint Nobody

Fantasia:

All My Life

Yes, America, you are dumb.

But at least you redeemed yourself somewhat by kicking Carly off.

Some AI Headlines

Over at MJ's Blog you can get a daily digest of American Idol headlines. So comprehensive is it, in fact, that I always feel a little overwhelmed. Go check it out if you have some time. Otherwise, here are a few that I found interesting:

An interesting collection of Idol Controversies from season 1-6. It wouldn't be a reality show without drama.

The Headline (American Idol Hopeful David Archuleta Speaks Out on Dad, Crushes) makes it seem like you will get more than you actually do, but I love David's quote about celebrity crushes. Keep it real, David. Keep it real.

A Seattle PI Reader Blog talks about going to a concert by Jon Peter Lewis (one of my favs from season 3)

Heard about David Cook's solo album but can't find it because it keeps getting pulled off the shelves? Go over to davidcooktheamericanidolrunnerup (okay, runnerup was added by me) and enjoy. It's actually not bad.

Studio Versions

So I got the chance to listen to the studio versions of this week's Andrew Lloyd Weber songs.

Wow!

Without exception (excepting Carly, of course) they are absolutely fantastic.

Brooke sounds relaxed in her singing while still infusing the song with all the emotion that it demands.

Jason doesn't breathe noisily into the mic and delivers an unusual but moving take on a very well known song.

David Cook delivers a beautiful and moving straight-up version of Music of the Night.

David Archuleta twists his song almost beyond recognition, but somehow maintains the required reverence for it so that at the end, whether you love or hate the arrangement, you have to show respect for him.

Carly is gone. Hooray!

You can buy the studio versions of these songs on iTunes. I am not going to encourage anybody to simply go over to YouTube and search for "[artist name] studio version" and then enjoy all of them free of charge. Please do not do that. It is not appropriate.

David Archuleta's Stage Dad

MTV has an article up about the "stage dad" rumor that is going around in regards to Jeff Archuleta, David's dad. I don't want to take sides in this debate, but it is nice to at least see him get a chance to explain himself. It also has some interesting information, like the fact that David has already written several of his own songs to record when Idol is over.

Carly is Outtie

So instead of YouTubing the show or watching it on TV, this time, we followed the liveblog over at Idol Live, which was an interesting way to find out what happens. Certainly wouldn't do it for the performance night, but it worked out okay for us on the results night.

And the results? Totally satisfactory. I have never gotten on board the Carly train and I'm glad to see it wreck. She certainly has a big voice, but she could not keep on key to save her life and she kept thinking that she sounded good when she got loud and screechy. That voice could have gone a long way in the right hands, but alas, such was not meant to be, and the idol world is all the better for it.

Vaya con Dios, Carly. You will not be missed.

By the way, does anybody else notice that in this picture she looks like a total scary airbrushed robot of doom and destruction? I have some professional training in photography. I don't know too much, but I do know that if you have to use up all your eyeliner in one sitting, it isn't going to translate to pretty on camera.

Sarah Brightman Night Recap

So here we are ladies and gentlemen at the American Idol Sarah Brightman night. We are glad you all came out to join us. Now let's take a look at our contestants:

Randy Jackson will be singing "Yo Yo Dog that was Just Aaaight"
Paula will be singing "You are So Beautiful"
Simon will be singing "the Love Boat"

Okay, so maybe not, but how much shall we wager on Randy saying that a contestant's performance was pitchy, that it started off bad, but by the middle he was feeling it, that there were a few pitch problems, and that it was just okay? How about Paula talking longer than she needs to only to end up saying nothing, acting drunk, telling a contestant who just had a poor performance that she is beautiful, and standing up and seal-clapping to David Cook's mumbling? What about Simon comparing at least one contestant to a Cruise Ship singer, telling another that he doesn't mean to be rude, but... or telling us that he is going to agree with (pause for dramatic effect), or - big shocker - insinuating that Ryan is gay?

Okay, who wants to take this bet?

So anyway, let's take a listen to the musical offerings of the night:

First up is Syesha Mercado, who will sing One Rock and Roll Too Many, which, according to everything I know about this song (which consists of me looking it up on YouTube when I found out she would be singing it) is normally sung by three different people. Syesha tried being two different people on Dolly Parton night, so why not add another in there for this performance. Really, I think this is quite a stretch of a song for her and am interested to see what she can do with it. By the way, was Baron Andrew really wearing red pants? I like how much personality he is showing. Syesha, too. Wow! Talk about a sultry performance. So far this is the Syesha I've been expecting all along. 5 more shows like this one and she could surprise everybody. She is loving it up on that stage! Kerry: "Excellent! That was such a good job" Judges: Randy says best yet, Paula loved it, Simon thought it was sexy. My only concern is that she sang her pants off at the first performance. Will everyone remember to vote for her at the end? I did. Braden rating: 8.5/10 Kerry rating: 8.5/10

Riding in the coveted spot of death (cue dramatic music) is Jason Castro, who is singing Memory from Cats, which seems just a little bit of an odd choice for him. I can certainly see him working it out, but he is going to have to hit it in just the right way. Let's see what happens. So when Jason is being interviewed, he looks very high. I suppose that is pretty much the status quo for him, though. He starts off kind of weak. This song needs power, and he isn't hitting that yet. Now he is back to his breathy singing which doesn't do it for me. I think I have said this every week, but now I'll say it again: I love Jason's voice, but I hate his breathing. If he would just learn to sing into a mic without breathing his h's and p's right into it, I would like him a lot more. Kerry: "I liked it. He touched me." Judges: Randy said it was a train wreck. Braden agrees. Paula says he is not a female power-balladeer. Thanks Paula. Simon thought it was the longest two minutes of his life and that it sounded like he was being forced to sing a song that he didn't want to sing. Thank you Simon. Braden rating: 4.5/10 Kerry rating: 7.5/10

Third tonight is Brooke White, who is singing You Must Love Me from the Evita soundtrack. I heard rumor that ALW held out his highest hopes for her on tonight's show. I'm watching Weber tutoring, and wow! He is actually tutoring! And she's off... and she's way off - in fact, she is starting over. This doesn't bode very well for her. I may have to powervote tonight. She is going to have to knock it out to make up for that. She isn't doing that in the first part. Now she gets to the bridge, and she is picking up steam. I like the emotion that she is putting into it. Really interesting. I'm going to have to listen to it again. Kerry: "She shouldn't have started over. This time it just made her look bad." Judges: Randy agreed with me. Paula agrees with Kerry (and me), and then babbles. Simon thought it became uncomfortable for her. Good job to Brooke for not interrupting the judges. Brooke is now admitting that she forgot the words, and Simon comes to her rescue. I feel better about her now. Kerry, too. She may still be in trouble. Braden rating: 6/10 Kerry rating: 6/10

Next up we have David Archuleta, who is doing the stupid tie-not-quite-tied-up thing. He will sing Think of Me from the Phantom of the Opera. Tonight is right up his alley, which could actually work against him as he will face a wall of expectations. I'm excited because I would like to see what a guy (especially one with his talent) can do with this song. And as has been pointed out many times before, David Archuleta could sing my pharmacology textbook and sound good. THANK YOU, MR WEBER, FOR TELLING HIM TO OPEN HIS EYES! David is taking this song and Claptonizing it. I'm not sure what to think of that. Certainly it is different than what I was expecting. The vocal runs are actually working for me. Unfortunately, he is kind of mumbling some of the words. Now it is over, and I'm trying to find Andrew Lloyd Weber in that. I can't do it. Now that was a brave performance. Better than ripping off some band from the internet. Kerry: "I don't think it was his best performance, but I thought he did a good job." Judges: Randy thought it was the bomb, Paula thought it was almost as perfect as a double vodka tonic, and Simon thought it was pleasant, but one of his weakest. I'm taking Simon off my Christmas card list. Braden rating: 8/10 Kerry rating: 7.5/10

In the set-up role is Carly Smithson. She is singing Superstar. Of course. I have no further comment. Let's get to the wretching... er, I mean, singing. She completely turned around when she started singing a song about doubting Jesus. Of course. Carly is wearing sleeves. Two weeks in a row! She is starting off okay. Now we are getting to the chorus and she is going off key and trying to do her big whiny notes. Not working. Does she really need to do the yeah yeah yeah yeahs? Ugg, this started off with some promise, and then went steadily downhill until the ending which kept just going and going and going. Ugg. Kerry: "All the problems I have with Carly were just emphasized in this song. Too high-pitched and nasally, and when she goes up high, it is just grating on the nerves. To me, Carly is just fading away." My prediction of her going home just may come true. Judges: Randy thought it was good. Paula thought it was so unexpected (why, Paula? go listen to the original. There is nothing special about this performance) Simon thought it was one of his favorites of the night. Carly is holding up a shirt that says "Simon Loves Me" and screaming like a little gay boy. Wow, she is ugly when she smiles. Braden rating: 3/10 Kerry rating: 4/10

And tonight's closer is David Cook, who will sing Music of the Night from the Phantom of the Opera. I wasn't expecting great things from DC tonight, but as I think about this song, I think that he could really do well with it, but he is going to have to resist his typical mumblyness, because this song requires great diction. I actually hope that he is going to stretch himself and just sing the song without trying to rock it out. There are plenty of big notes that he can stretch out, and even a few high notes that he can reach for. Unfortunately for him, I found a video of Josh Groban singing this song and knocking it out of the park (despite a very bizarre accompaniment), so now I'm going to be comparing him to one of the best pure singers I can think of. So with such high hopes, here we go. I wonder what Andrew Lloyd Weber thinks about being called "the dude". He starts out spot on. Loving it. I could listen to this song a few dozen times. I'm trying to not like this performance, but I just can't do it (or not do it, or whatever my double reverse negatives all come out to). Not so hot on the last line, but everything else was amazing. Kerry: "I was really surprised. I was really surprised by that one. I was very surprised." Judges: Randy recycles his compliment from David A. Paula is still high on Oxycodone. Simon doesn't like this side of him. I pee on Simon. Oh, and by the way, I would still take Josh over David, but that was tremendous. (Simon impersonation voice:) Sorry. Braden rating: 9/10 Kerry rating: 8/10

So shall we put all of those ratings together? (average Braden and Kerry rating)

David Cook 8.5
Syesha Mercado 8.5
David Archuleta 7.75
Brooke White 6
Jason Castro 6
Carly Smithson 3.5

And now... for the moment all three of you have been waiting for:

(cue dramatic music)
(cue pause that lasts entirely too long until just when you are about to throw something at the TV)

THE PREDICTIONS

Braden thinks the bottom three will be Jason, Carly, and Brooke with Carly going home
Kerry thinks the bottom three will be Carly, Jason, and Brooke with Brooke going home

Compare tonight's performances

It seems like the songs for tonight have been leaked, so here are some links to youtube clips of the originals for your viewing pleasure:

David Archuleta is singing Think of Me from the Phantom of the Opera
Carly Smithson is singing Superstar from Jesus Christ, Superstar
Syesha Mercado is singing One Rock and Roll Too Many from Starlight Express
Brooke White is singing You Must Love Me from Evita
Jason Castro is singing Memory from Cats
David Cook is singing Music of the Night from the Phantom of the Opera

Other notable ALW songs that did not get selected: (which one will be the group song?)

All I Ask of You from the Phantom of the Opera
Close Every Door from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Don't Cry for Me Argentina from Evita
Buenos Aires from Evita
As if We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset Boulevard
Pie Jesu from Requiem

Idol Predictions

With the contestants singing songs by Andrew Lloyd Weber tonight, I'll throw my neck out on the chopping block and make my prediction that the bottom three will be Jason, Carly, and Syesha (although she will sing well, but will continue to not have any kind of a fan base). Carly is saying goodbye this week. I'm saying goodriddance.

Songs I wish they would have picked

Mariah Carey week went ok, but there are several songs that should have been picked and got passed over.

Fantasy
Always Be My Baby (although I'm told that David Cook's mumbled mess was actually this song in disguise)
Dreamlover
Emotions
Someday
Can't Let Go

Thoughts on Kristy Lee

Oh, forgot to comment on this one last week after she was given the boot:

Bye Kristy. You were hot, but you had no prayer of winning. Good luck making a small time country album. Send me a picture some time.

American Idol is rigged?

This may be the first and only time I will ever link to the New York Times, but they have an interesting article about how rigged the show is.

My take? I really don't care how well scripted or body-guarded the show is, as long as the voting and subsequent elimination is real. I have my doubts, but if I find out we are being taken for a ride on that issue, I'm out.

Top 7 night live(ish)blog

Sorry to be a little late in posting this. I think by the time it goes up, the results will already be known, but I've never been one to peek at my Christmas gifts before the 25th, and I'm not going to check out who gets the boot until I've seen all the videos either.

Mariah Carey night. This tells me that Jason, Kristy, and Carly are in trouble. Just my pre-perfomance predictions.

Seriously, though, what happened to Mariah? She went from one of the best singers in the world to just another R&B girl. Mariah, why did you sell out? Go back to the music that made everyone love you. Oh, and your new single? Some of me weren't likin' it!

On to the show!

1 David Archuleta: I read somewhere on one of the AI blogs that I subscribe to that 40% of those who have gone first this year have then been eliminated. I think it is safe to say that David could belch his song and still be safe. He is singing "When You Believe", which is not technically a Mariah song (she actually did a cover of Michelle Pfieffer if you can believe that). I don't like the whole R&B kick to it, but he is nailing it! I love the way he isn't afraid to let the backup singers take the melody for a minute. I love it! This boy's got pipes, no debating that. Kerry: "I wasn't overly impressed with this first viewing. It may just be the style. I want to give it another chance" Judges: they like it, too. Braden rating: 8.5/10 Kerry rating: 6.5/10

2 Carly Smithson: From the pre-video, you can tell she is going to sing poorly, despite Mariah's best attempts to hint otherwise. She is singing "Without You". It would be great if halfway through, she suddenly starts singing "Ken Leee!" This is starting out flat and without emotion. Now she adds some power, but she is still flat and now we add some nasal tone. Now we get even bigger and she adds some "pitch problems" to the brew. Pretty soon, the stew will be all ready to eat. Kerry: "Her facial expressions are so painful... it is painful for me to watch her!" They are showing a picture of her husband, and it looks like he has a big scar on his forehead to go along with all the ugly tattoos. I know he had been retiscent about going on the show because he didn't want people to judge him for his tats. He should have thought about that before he destroyed his body. Okay, back to idol. Okay, not yet. First I want to say that this was a dumb choice of song for Carly. First, it is too big for her (despite everyone claiming that she has a big voice), and second, if you choose to sing this song after Ken Lee went viral, then you are just asking for comparisons unless you absolutely nail it. She didn't nail it. Judges: mediocre reviews. Thank you for your honesty, Simon. Carly says that she and her cleavage had a good time. Yeah, but we didn't. Braden rating: 4.5/10 Kerry rating: 6.5/10

3 Syesha Mercado: Mariah night should be right up Syesha's alley. It seems like Mariah is really mentoring these kids as opposed to what I saw from Dolly, who just tried to find random praise for each of them. Syesha is singing Vanishing. As we start, Syesha is doing something that I was hoping to see from her: using a strong yet soft voice for the slower, more tender parts of the song. When she finally gets out her big voice, she does a little too much R&B for me, but not a note off key. She nails it. Kerry: "Wow! This girl can sing! She probably picked this song that no one knows to avoid the comparisons." Judges: they liked it. Paula can't stop talking. Braden rating: 8/10 Kerry rating: 8/10

4 Brooke White: Brooke is going to sing "Hero" which is one of my all-time favorite Mariah songs. Tall order. I can't watch the pre-video segment. All I see is the cleavage that is climbing out of Mariah's shirt and spilling on the floor. Um, Mariah, would you mind PUTTING THEM AWAY PLEASE? THIS IS A FAMILY SHOW! thank you. Back to Brooke, who is sitting at the piano to sing. This could go either way. I like this version a lot. There is a definite Brooke spin to it, and everyone knows that I really hope to invite Brooke and her husband over for dinner. When we are done eating, we may even play a game of Scrabble, or maybe Settlers of Cataan. Yes, I know, living life on the edge. Anyway, while I was typing, Brooke was getting faster and faster, until at the end of her two minutes, she had actually sung all of Ms. Carey's songs. Twice. Calm the nerves, Brooke. Kerry: "I liked it, but the fact that it was rushed made it not as good." Judges: Randy likes the singer/songwriter, Paula things she sang too fast, Simon was busy thinking about her buns. The judges are getting out of control with this hamburger analogy. Drop it. Please, just drop it. Haha! Ryan made a funny. Braden rating: 6.5/10 (I want to give it higher, but she just went way too fast. I bet the studio version will rock) Kerry rating: 7/10

5 Kristy Lee Cook: Kristy can't believe she gave Mariah goosebumps. Kerry gives me goosebumps (bonus points!). She is singing "Forever". Kristy, open your eyes. Starts off bad. Doesn't get better. I love her dress, though. Now she is hula dancing. What's up with that? Okay, it gets a little better to the end, but never gets really good. Kerry: "I understand that country is her thing, but I don't like the twang that she puts in. But people seem to like it." Judges: Randy's not mad at her. Paula's blown away. And drunk. And babbly. Thank you, Simon for being honest. Whiny is just the word that I was looking for. Braden rating: 6/10 Kerry rating: 7/10

6 David Cook: Mariah is surprised that David chose "Always be my Baby." Kerry's response: "you think?". Here we go. David needs to resolve his mumbling problem. And his "I can't hold a tune" problem. This better get good at the bridge. He is keeping it way too low. That doesn't do him any favors. I like the beard look on him. TUCK YOUR FREAKING SHIRT IN! meh. Kerry: "I admire him for choosing a very poppy, upbeat song, and changing it up. I just don't think it worked." Judges: We are smoking some kind of hallucinogen but we wont share it with you. I'm disappointed in Simon for his dishonesty. Braden rating: 5/10 Kerry rating: 5.5/10

7 Jason Castro: The best compliment Mariah could find for David is "I think he's really unique." This doesn't bode well. He is singing "I don't Want to Cry". Talk about taking a song in a different direction! He is going kind of Reggae with it. I actually like it, though - except for his breathing into the mic problems that continue. This is a great solution to the "I'm singing a very famous song that people love and don't want to be compared to Mariah" problem. Kerry: "I liked the drum thing. Your butt." Judges: Randy thought it sounded like being at a beach Luau. Paula wants to be at that Luau. Simon is good at the "Leave you hanging about whether he will praise it or not" thing. He liked it. Calls it cool. Braden rating: 8/10 (Jason's best yet) Kerry rating: 7.5/10

So now to put those in order (average Braden and Kerry score):

Syesha: 8
David A: 7.5
Jason: 7.5
Brooke: 6.75
Kristy Lee: 6.5
Carly: 5.5
David C: 5.25

Finally, predictions for the bottom 3:

Braden: Brooke, Carly, Kristy. Carly goes home in another fake outrage moment. Braden is relieved.
Kerry: Brooke, Carly, Kristy. Carly goes home.

Surprised, but not sad

I was more than a little surprised to see Michael go home, but I"m not sad. I don't think he was as great a singer as the judges seemed to think, and besides, his singing talent is as a band's lead singer, not a solo artist. Get together a band, call it Aussie Rules or whatever, and have fun. People will tune in.

Top 8 Nite Liveblog

Today is my birthday, so I'm not doing a full live-blog. Just some highlights, and I'm not blogging the judges' comments unless they say something interesting. In other words, I'm not blogging the judges' comments.

1. Michael Johns - Starts out flat and painful. Gets better when he gets to the main chorus. What's inspirational about this? The high-pitch screaming isn't doing it for me. Kerry: I wasn't impressed. Braden Rating: 6/10 Kerry Rating: 6/10

2. Syesha Mercado - She is singing a song by my least favorite Idol ever. Syesha has a voice that is made to go big. I don't like how she sounds when she is singing small. I think the backup singers are too big in this song and overshadow what is adding up to quite a good performance by Syesha. Kerry: It was kind of forgettable. Braden Rating: 8/10 (ignoring the backup singers trying to overpower her) Kerry Rating: 6.5/10. Update: The judges kept comparing her to Fantasia, so we went and listened to her version of it from when she won season 3. Braden Rating for Fantasia: 3/10 Kerry Rating: 2/10. Nuff said. Okay maybe not enough said: At least Syesha's voice doesn't sound like a cartoon character.

3. Jason Castro - As the song starts, he sounds constipated and short of breath. I would like him a lot more if he didn't breathe into the mic. His actual singing isn't that bad, though... but nothing like Izzy. I'm just not feeling it. Kerry: Overall I liked it a lot. But I wasn't big on the falsetto. Braden Rating: 6/10 Kerry Rating: 7.5/10

4. Kristy Lee Cook - The woman with her head on the chopping block. I think we were :30 seconds in before she finally opened her eyes. Briefly. The singing isn't bad, though. It isn't good, though. She has way too much makeup on. Kerry: I was actually kind of moved. It wasn't the best, though. Braden Rating: 6.5/10 Kerry: 7/10. She may actually be safe this week.

5. David Cook - Mumble mumble mumble. Oh, was I supposed to be singing?
Mumble mumble mumble. Now for a change we move to off-key mumbling and
yelling with terrible-sounding background singers, and now some hand
tattoo that is supposed to mean something. How do you spell fishingforvotes? Kerry: It was aaaaaight.
I'm not mad at him. Braden Rating: 3/10 Kerry Rating: 5/10.

6. Carly Smithson - I see she is still sleeveless, and now we get cleavage to boot. She must be getting desperate. As the song starts, she actually sounds decent, even while continuing to look ugly and too-much-eyeliner-y. Then she gets to the big part and as usual can't handle it. Now it's becoming sloppy. And that's how it ends. Kerry: I didn't really like it. Braden Rating: 5.5/10 Kerry Rating: 5/10. Update: Simon says she may be in trouble. I agree. Then she tries to go for the victim route. Not gonna work.

7. David Archuleta - He starts out below his range, and doesn't get better until he gets to the chorus. Even then, this is somewhat disappointing David. He ends on a good note, though. Kerry: I understand why he started out low, because then when he got to the chorus it was in his range, but it made half the song not very good. Braden Rating: 6.5/10 Kerry Rating: 7/10. Update: The judges loved it, so I went back and listened to it again with my eyes closed. I liked it a whole stinking lot more the second time around. Braden updated rating: 7.5/10. Kerry liked it better as well.

8. Brooke White - Brooke has a tall order to impress me, because I love love love JT. I wasn't big on the beginning, but she picked it up toward the end and added feeling to it. I like how she was more serious, like she understood the message of the song, though I wish the song was just a notch faster. Kerry: I was moved. Braden Rating: 7.5/10 Kerry Rating: 7.5/10. Oh, and by the way, Brooke: I'm not mad at you either. You've got a Friend.

So let's put that in order:

Brooke 7.5
David A 7.25
Syesha 7.25
Kristy 6.75
Jason 6.75
Michael 6
Carly 5.25
David C 4

Yes, you see that correctly (go ahead and cancel the optometrist appointment you just made). Kristy Lee and Syesha are in the top half of our ratings tonight, and really, what other ratings matter?

Bottom 3 predictions:

Braden: Carly, Kristy (still not enough of a fan base), Jason. Carly goes home in a huge upset (and I am a happy man)
Kerry: Kristy, Carly, Syesha. Kristy goes home (although Carly blew it tonight and her going home wouldn't be a huge surprise)

A touching story

Here is a nice article from an unlikely source about one of the Idols giving something back.

Top 9 night liveblog

I'm not feeling so great this evening (despite doing my taxes and finding out we are getting a good refund), so I doubt I will feel up to a whole lot of humor.

So tonight is Dolly Parton night. How disappointing. We have the chance for them to select from a wide range of Country songs (see my post from a few days ago), and instead they are now forced to sing from a limited selection of old songs. I'm all about capitalism, and I understand that we are trying to support Dolly's new album here, but come on! I hope that I'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm not holding my breath.

1 Brooke White:
So we start with Brooke in the deathly #1 slot today. It is hard to be here and get plenty of votes unless you really have a memorable performance. Did Dolly just say, "you must be gonna doin' some pickin'?" Did Brooke just say that Dolly is "huge?" The funny thing is, I don't think she caught her own innuendo. Gotta love those Mormon roots. Brooke is singing "Jolene". Here we go. Before we have her on the piano, now on the guitar. This is one talented woman. She sounds kind of out of breath in this performance. I sure don't like the song very much, but I expected that. All-in-all a good performance, but it is largely typical Brooke. Nothing really special about it tonight other than being a good Brooke performance. Kerry: "it was a rocky beginning, but then it got better." Randy: it was alright (as in a compliment). Paula: blah blah blah emotional connection blah blah blah you are Brooke White blah blah blah. Simon: you were lacking emotion. You didn't look good together. Braden: Since when did this become American Group?? I love Brooke. Braden's rating: 7.5/10 Kerry: 6.5/10

2 David Cook:
David comes across as fake to me. Dolly has lots of compliments for him, though. David is singing "Little Sparrow". Here we go. Starts out with an awkward note that he doesn't quite hit right. I can't understand the words that he is saying. I am getting the feeling that this is a song I will like more the second time around. Wow! The audience hand-waving thing is actually synchronized. What was that awkward note at the end on his guitar? Kerry: "His hair actually looks good. I loved the song except for a few notes." Randy: hot, consistent performance. Paula: blah blah blah haircut blah blah blah. Simon: If you can make a song about Sparrows good..... Braden's rating: 6/10. Kerry: 8/10.

3 Ramiele Malubay:
Dolly has good things to say about Ramiele. She is singing "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind". Here we go. Starting off very boring-ish. What is this squatting thing that she calls dancing? She is getting better as she goes, but still seems off a little. Did she just say "another place in dime?" I'm wondering as I listen if she is off or if the backup singers are off or if in some strange alternate universe that is the way the song is supposed to go. Kerry: "When you have backup singers you have to overpower them or you are just singing along with them, and she didn't really stand out from the backup singers." Randy: Ramiele must be relieved - Randy's not mad at her. Paula: blah blah blah air punch blah blah blah. Simon: "We're not going to remember this in 10 years, are we?" Cruise ship. Ramiele: pout pout pout. Braden's rating: 5/10 Kerry: 5/10

4 Jason Castro:
"I would dread to have to do those locks." HA HA HA... Jason is singing "Travelin' Thru". Here we go. I like the beginning. Did he just say "I'm a piece of spit?" There he goes again with his P's and his H's right in the mic. Just when I was starting to like him. All-in-all a reasonable performance. Kerry: "Pretty good. It looked like he was trying harder." Randy: started rough (?!?!?!) but got better. Paula: blah blah blah please pass the vodka blah blah blah. Simon: didn't like it at all. Didn't get it. Braden's rating: 6.5/10 Kerry: 7/10.

5 Carly Smithson:
My Mommy taught me that if I don't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all. Carly is singing "Here You Come Again". Here we go again. She kind of has a Brooke edge to her voice tonight. It is actually not that bad so far. Until she came to the fake powernote with "senses". Now we are most of the way through the song, and I'm falling asleep. Booooooring! Kerry: "I liked the verses, especially the first verse when she was calm and more quiet, but I don't like her when she tries to put power in it." Now for the judges, who for some inexplicable reason are in love with her. Randy: "one of the better performances of the night" Paula: blah blah blah beat up Randy blah blah blah. Simon: Good, not great. Have a word with whoever is dressing you. Braden: THANK YOU SIMON!!!!!!! Kerry: That needed to be said. Then comes the team-up-on-Simon moment. Simon defends himself quite nicely and Paula feels personal injury that Simon is being truthful. Braden's rating: 5/10 Kerry: 6/10.

6 David Archuleta: Based on the few notes that he sings in front of Dolly this will be a good one. Dolly: I'm wearing false eyelashes... that's not all that's false about my face." David is singing "Smoky Mountain Memories". Here we go. David starts out doing his intense stare of death into the camera. Solid performance. Kerry: "Wow, he can sing." Randy: never mind Carly, you suck. David was the best performance of the night. Paula: blah blah blah aura blah blah blah. Simon: "on the money" Braden's rating: 8/10 Kerry: 8/10.

7 Kristy Lee Cook: Let's pause for a little beauty contest... okay, that didn't take long. Kristy wins. Kristy: "screw you, Mom." She is singing "Coat of Many Colors". Here we go. She is spending more time with her eyes closed than open. Not bad, though. Pretty good, in fact. Vote for the worst keeps saying how bad she is, but when she sings like this I have to very much disagree. Once more, she is making the case for Ramiele being sent home. Kerry: "it was okay, but I don't think it did her any favors." It sounded too country. Randy: something about a wheelhouse. Paula: blah blah blah your best performance blah blah blah. Simon: last week was your best. This week was pleasant but forgetable. Braden's rating: 7/10. Kerry: 5.5/10.

8 Syesha Mercado:
Dolly: "and of course what Whitney Houston added to it" In other words, she is singing the Whitney version. Syesha is singing "I Will Always Love You". Here we go. Is she really sitting on the piano? Weird. This one is not starting so good. She has a big voice but where is it. Not she is into the meat of the song but is not taking it anywhere. Okay, now it is getting better. How long can she possibly hold that note? There is holding a note for a long time and then there is holding a note for a gratuitously long time. This was gratuitous. With such a short song, though, she needed to get into it more quickly and let us enjoy the emotion of it. Kerry: "she's got a great voice." Randy: pretty good. Paula: blah blah blah let's talk about... blah blah blah. Simon: I'm going to spend too much time comparing you to Whitney instead of just rating how you sing. Braden's rating: 7/10 Kerry: 7.5/10

9 Michael Johns:
Michael does not sound good singing to Dolly. Yeah right, Dolly is going to write songs for him. Michael is singing "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right". Here we go. It doesn't sound any better on stage than it did in the sound studio. He sounds pained singing this. I think it is sad that he is being out-performed by the guitar. I'm hurting for him with this song. Kerry: "I really liked that." Randy: blazing hot. Paula: blah blah blah you look gorgeous, have my babies blah blah blah. Simon: the best I've heard you. Braden: wow, everyone else seemed to like it. Maybe I'll enjoy it more the second go around.
Braden's rating: 5.5/10 Kerry: 8/10

So now to put those in order (average Braden and Kerry score):

David A: 8
Syesha: 7.25
Brooke: 7
David C: 7
Michael: 6.75
Jason: 6.75
Kristy Lee: 6.25
Carly: 5.5
Ramiele: 5

Finally, predictions for the bottom 3:

Braden: Ramiele, Kristy, and Carly. Ramiele goes home.
Kerry: Ramiele, Kristy, and Carly. Kristy goes home.
